Level One: 600 DPI
Scanning your photos at this resolution is optimal. You can easily print a poster at this resolution. It ensures increased crispness and less dithering, based on the quality of the photo, of course.
The file sizes, however, are large: between 6-10 MB per photo scan for a 4x6 image. This requires ample file storage.

Level Two: 300 DPI
Most photo scanning services offer 300 DPI as their gold standard. This option is ideal if you want to have a digital version of your photo. Ideal for digital frames, archiving and smaller reprints of 4x6 and 5x7, in some cases.
Average file size is under 500KB which requires minimal file storage.
